DRIVING TOUR - 01
Take a relaxing drive, with your local guide, through Old Ketchikan and learn about the fascinating beginnings of this historic town. You will drive thru the “Tunnel” and over the boardwalk planks of Water Street. Your guide will entertain you with stories of the growth and importance of the fishing industry and the waterfront of Ketchikan. You will drive to “New Town”, by the City Park, and the famous Ketchikan Creek before returning to the dock. You will see more of Ketchikan by driving. Tour length: 1 hour + KETCHIKAN HISTORIC WALKING TOUR – 05 Also known as the Historical Ketchikan & Creek Street Walking Tour. Gain a unique understanding of Ketchikan and its Tlingit culture on this guided walking tour of Alaska’s “First City”. Your guide is of Tlingit descent and will share personal knowledge of the many changes Ketchikan has experienced over the years. The significance of totem poles within Native culture will be explained as you encounter them on your journey. Travel up infamous Creek Street, the former red light district, and learn of its important economic roll in Ketchikan’s early history. Walk up historic “Married Man’s Trail” and hear how it received its name. Discover the awesome journey salmon must endure as they head to their spawning ground when you visit a salmon ladder. Trees, shrubbery and flowers are plentiful along the route and your guide will share their importance to the Tlingit’s food gathering practices. Your guide will return you to the downtown shopping area near the cruise ship pier after this easy walk of approximately nine blocks. Questions are encouraged, as your hosts want you to leave Ketchikan with a better understanding of the community and its Native culture. KETCHIKAN HISTORIC WALKING TOUR WITH TLINGIT STYLE SNACK AND NARRITIVE OF TLINGIT HISTORY AND TRIDATIONS. TOUR - 02 Gain a unique understanding of Kethikan and it s Tlingit Culture onthe this guided walking tour of Alaska's "First City". Activity level : 2 Tour time 3 hours Minimum 8 guests Maximum 26 KETCHIKAN & SAXMAN WALKING TOUR – 06 You'll be met dock side by an experienced local guide; you will travel by motor coach to Saxman Village, a Tlingit Village two and one half miles from Ketchikan. Your guide will relate the legends behind the poles. You will visit the carving shed where you will be watching the carvers in action, creating art work out of a log. Saxman’s carvers are world famous and include Nathan Jackson, whose totems grace the entrances of the Bundestag in Germany and the Field Museum in Chicago. Visit the Tribal House and see the kind of life style of living in the earlier day and where festivals and dances are held. You will go to Ketchikan to do a one hour walking tour of Ketchikan, including the main sights and remnants of the early days with a focus on historic Creek Street and the importance of the creek to the early Native and white settlers. We'll travel from Creek Street by tram to the Cape Fox Lodge; a rustic hotel owned by the Tlingit’s where your guide will give a narration of Tlingit customs and traditions you'll enjoy a delicious Tlingit-style snack of Indian fried bread, smoked salmon, reindeer sausage, blue berry jam and assorted beverages. INDIVIDUAL TOURS – 07 Your guide will pick you up dockside by private vehicle (6 or 14 passenger van). Your tour will be designed with your special interests in mind and may include: · A walking or driving tour of Ketchikan (includes the history of early Ketchikan and its growth, the infamous Creek Street and a tour of Dolly’s House (90 minutes) · Tour of Saxman (Tlingit Indian Village) including the Beaver Tribal House, the Carving shed and the largest collection of totem poles in Alaska (2 hours) Presentation of Tlingit culture and traditions (includes lecture, Tlingit style snack and demonstration of Tlingit song and dance) (1 ½ hour) and transportation back to your ship SAXMAN TOUR PERSONAL GUIDED TOUR - 08 You will be met dockside by an experienced local guide and travel by motor coach to Saxman Native Village three miles from Ketchikan. Your guide will narrate on the bus ride to this Tlingit Village the history of Saxman. You will see all the totem poles around the Village. Your guide will share the stories and legends behind the poles. You will see how totem poles are made first hand at the carving shed. Saxman's carvers are world-famous including Nathan Jackson, whose totems grace the entrances of Bundestag in Germany and the Field Museum in Chicago. You will enter the Tribal Clan House and see how the way of living was 100 years ago. You will come to understand the importance of that style of living. Total tour time: 2 hours TLINGIT CULTURE SHOW – 09 - (10 Snack) You will be met dockside by an experienced local guide and will be transferred by motor coach to Cape Fox Lodge, a rustic hotel owned by the Tlingit Indians. Upon arrival you will walk a short distance to the hotel, which you will be welcomed by Tlingit elder, Joe Williams and given a gift of a cedar Christmas Ornament. You will enjoy a Tlingit -style snack of Indian fried bread, smoked salmon, reindeer sausage, blueberry jam and assorted beverages (one glass of wine or beer is included). Joe will give a narration of Tlingit customs and traditions. Several members of Joe's family will display their traditional ceremonial clothing and entertain you with Tlingit song and dance. You will be encouraged to participate in the dancing. At the conclusion of the show you will be given a parting gift. You will have the choice of returning to the dock by motor coach or taking a walking tour from the hotel through downtown Ketchikan. Total tour time: 3 hours *Minimum of 20 guests required. TLINGIT CULTURE SHOW AND SAXMAN TOUR – 11- (12 Snack) You will be met dockside by an experienced local guide and travel by motor coach to Saxman Village, a Tlingit village three miles from Ketchikan. Your guide will narrate on the bus, telling you about the history of Saxman, what it is today and what you will see and do on your tour of Saxman. Your guide will show you around the village, including Totem Row (where your guide will relate the legends behind the poles), the carving shed (where you'll be able to see the carvers in action). Saxman's carvers are world-famous and include Nathan Jackson, whose totems grace the entrances of the Bundestag in Germany and the Field Museum in Chicago. You will enter the Tribal House (where festivals and dances are held) you will come to an understanding of the importance of that style of living. After your visit to Saxman you will be transferred to Cape Fox Lodge, a rustic hotel owned by the Tlingit Indians. At the Lodge you will be welcomed by Tlingit elder, Joe Williams and given a gift of a cedar Christmas Ornament.
